Mfangano Island Camp occupies an entire secluded
bay on the western shores of the Mifangano, a tiny island in the
Lake Victoria with just one road!, It is situated under ancient,
giant fig trees direct by the lakeshore. The only
way to reach Mfangano Island is by light aircraft, an Kenya
Safari adventure in itself. You land on a dusty airstrip,
then it’s a short ride by speedboat to the camp.
There are only six rooms, close
to the waters edge, and decorated with local handicrafts. All rooms
are built in the local Luo tribal style, walls of smoothed mud and
clay, rooves of thatch and banana leaf, which gives a cool and airy
atmosphere. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms, and
a own private veranda with sunbed, from where you can watch the
sunset and the colourful fisherboats.
The central dining room and lounge
are fanned by breezes from the lake.
The meals in Mifangano Island Camp
are superb. Fresh salads (picked fresh from the island’s vegetable
gardens and orchards) and the daily catch served with fresh, crusty
bread and chilled wine.
